Activities

HomeHaven plans three or four member activities per month, most of which are free and to which HomeHaven offers carpooling or other transportation.  Some are lectures or discussion groups treating intellectual subjects such as literature and world affairs; some focus on practical subjects such as health, wellness, and  home safety and maintenance.  These events are usually led by members of HomeHaven who are expert in these fields.

Other activities include visits to exhibitions at museums, gardens and historical sites in New Haven, and elsewhere in Connecticut. The cost of these trips is just the admission to the exhibition.

Once or twice a year, HomeHaven arranges reduced group rates for attendance at nearby theaters including Long Wharf, the Yale Repertory Theater, Yale Cabaret, Goodspeed Opera House, and the Shubert.  Summer outings have included moderately priced cruises in the New Haven harbor and the Thimble Islands.

Also open to members are a number of small interest groups that meet once or twice a month in members’ homes.  These include: Memoir Writing, Book Group, Pins and Needles (knitting, sewing and embroidery with tea and conversation), Cooking in Different Languages.  Plans are underway to create a series of game groups, for example Scrabble, Canasta, Bridge, Backgammon, and Poker.

Annual HomeHaven celebrations include a Pot Luck picnic, a December Holiday party and, in March, the Mud Follies, which features performances by talented members and friends of HomeHaven. All of these events are free.
